On a typical day, Roberts Livestock Representative Bec Oakley usually has an early start, heading out to assess lambs and cattle and working out the optimal time to sell them.

Bec began her career with Ruralco as a trainee, learning from her colleagues at Roberts and other Ruralco businesses. “I was able to spend time at the Davidson Cameron & Co branch at Gunnedah and learnt a huge amount from Luke Scicluna, who has so much experience in the industry,” explained Bec.

Getting her hands dirty and working with clients’ stock is part of her role and ahead of a sale she can be found: running the calves off the cows, picking the keeper heifers and then penning weaners on sale day. “I really love the practical side of the job and working with the stock,” she said.

In her nine years with Roberts Bec has built a strong client base throughout the Southern Midlands and Central Highlands of Tasmania.

She is constantly looking for opportunities to help them reach new markets or increase the value of their stock. It is clear her clients are at the centre of everything she does, “I will reach out to vendors, purchasers, livestock carriers and the administration team involved, to ensure I can head off any problems before they arise”.

It is clear Bec has found her calling and says she is one of a lucky few who can say their first job is their dream job, “If I can make an extra dollar for a farmer it means a lot to me”.

“When I bring a client on board, I go out and visit them. I sit around their table and get to know them and their business plan, so I can be a part of those conversations going forward,”
